New Rules for CABs auditing against ISO 45001:2018

Little man - Safety NetISO has published in March a new complementary technical specification – ISO/IEC TS 17021-10

This new Technical Specification defining the required skills and knowledge of those bodies, and their auditors, that audit organizations who have implemented the new health and safety standard.

To give it its full title, ISO/IEC TS 17021-10, Conformity assessment – Requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of management systems – Part 10: Competence requirements for auditing and certification of occupational health and safety management systems, is intended to guarantee a harmonized approach to the accreditation of an ISO 45001 certification.

It is aimed at auditors or anyone making certification decisions related to ISO 45001 (and will ultimately serve certification, accreditation and regulatory bodies) for the purpose of confirming that auditing and certification decisions related to the Standard have been carried out by those who have the competence to do so. And will affect OHSMS Consultants who work as auditors for CABs.

There are skills related to OH&S required of auditors (e.g., terminology, principles, concepts, tools and techniques) and Certification Bodies (CABs) carrying out accredited certification to ISO 45001 will, as part of their preparation for accreditation, will have to review, confirm and record the competencies of their Auditors against the requirements of ISO/IEC TS 17021-10.

When will Accredited Certification to ISO 45001 be available?

There are a few CABs for 'prestige' reasons are offering accredited certification already. The vast majority of CABs will take 6 months or more to gain their own accreditation (yes, certification bodies too have to formally complete an ISO 45001:2018 transition process).  If yours is an orgnization certified to BS OHAS 18001, you can expeect your CAB to switch you to ISO 45001 at the end of your current 3-year cotract for CAB Certification Services.  If for commercial or other reasons you want certification to the new Standard sooner, talk to your CAB immediately and find out how soon they expect to be able to offer ISO 45001 Certification.
